Starling Castle: Gewurztraminer

Image
Wednesday night and the bad batch season finale is out! Damn did I make a mistake drinking wine... so many tears were poured out tonight, but back to the wine! The Starling Castle, Gewurztraminer was imported from Pfalz Germany and damn is it extremely sweet. Unfortunately, this wine didnt indicate a vintage. On the scale, it actually is listed as " more than semi-sweet, but off of the usual wines that I taste, this one is loaded with sugar. This wine generally costs about $10, so I guess for that price, its fantastic.  Online, I found that this wine has notes of peach, sweet orange, cinnamon, and honey flavors. In my case, I feel like this tastes like a candied apple or honey glazed apple. I definitely get notes of cinnamon, but there is a strong honey flavor. I did have it with some chicken alfredo, but unfortunately I feel like it made the wine worse. The acidity came out to play and gave me a sharp green apple flavor which was way too strong to drink with the alfredo. When u

2021 Piesporter Michelsberg: Riesling Kabinett

Image
Tuesday Wine night, Today we have a Riesling from Piesport, Germany and was priced around $13. In Vivino, many people found that this wine had strong green apple, pear, and citrus flavors. Using the Wine Folly flavor chart, https://shop.winefolly.com/collections/tool/products/wine-aromas-chart, the aromas from this wine present a green apple, honey smell. this is also brought forth in the actual tasting of the wine. After eating a few bites of Jerk chicken, the acidity of this wine died down and presented only fruity, pear and pineapple flavors. If I had to rate this riesling, Id give it a solid 9/10. I could drink this over and over again and never grow tired of it

Valpolicella Classico 2020

This beautiful red is from the Gamba winery in Verona Italy (and I luckily bought this wine for less than $15) The grapes in this wine are Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara, and Corvinone! Using the vivino app, I found out that the general rating of this wine is a 3.4 out of 5.   This wine packs a powerful sour cherry punch with a dash of pomegranate and blueberry. I would definitely eat something big and juicy, like a steak, with this wine. I unfortunately didnt drink this with food and suffered the consequences. I cant help but wonder though. This wine smacks you in the face with cherries, but if you were to age this wine how strong would the punch be then? It's definitely an idea worth experimenting with. Ill give this wine a 6/10 though. I cant see myself drinking this wine on a regular basis.

Mandatory blog - prior knowledge

Before taking this wine class, I never really cared about wine. Beer and liquor were my drinks of choice. I had tried wine before, but I thought it had tasted like a dirt and cherry mesh. I had primarily tasted red wines with a few gross white from California that left a disgusting aftertaste in my mouth, but never branched out or understood why people had a fixation over wine.       I never really branched out and the few winery visits that I went on, I mainly just stuck to the charcuterie boards and sampled my friends wine. There was never really a wine that stuck out to me that I would drink over a rum and coke. I always thought of wine as an inferior drink... until I took this course and started learning the roots and history of each drink. The amount of care that goes into each bottle and the amount of years of refining each grape to give a certain flavor is immensely interesting. Not to mention the history of each individual vineyard and how grapes can change their flavor d

Malvasia 2020

Image
Monday Wine Night! Oh did I mess up with this one. Little known fact, I'm studying in VT for a B.S. degree in chemistry and I have two assignments due tonight! But enough about me, time for wine! Malvasia is a sparkling wine (AMAZING), but that unfortunately means that the alcohol hits you faster. It's only 10% alcohol but it hits you like a truck. This Italian sweet wine tastes like Limoncello. Thats not an exaggeration. When I bought this wine, I thought they were joking, but this wine tastes like a $40 limoncello shot. Its amazing.    When I say this wine hits, I meant it. I love limoncello and this bottle was amazing. Id rank it a 9/10. The only reason I didnt rank it a 10/10 is because I could see myself drinking a bottle or two and then not buying the bottle again for a while, but the plus side of this wine is that it doesnt cost $40 dollars for when you want a shot of limoncello.  A little bit about the bottle since I went on a tangent there, It is 100% Malvasia grape.

Busch Gardens wine tastings

Image
Today, I visited Busch Gardens, Williamsburg with my family. On the side of rollercoasters and amazing food, Busch Gardens has fantastic wines from across the world. The three regions that were accentuated were France, Germany, and Italy. Today in each of the wine tastings, the people pouring the wines told stories about the regions the wines were from and helped boost my thirst for knowledge about wine!  France: Starting with the left of the whites from France is Francois Montand Demi-Sec Ice Edition. This wine isnt an ice wine, but when you add ice to it, itll enhance the flavor. This sparking blend is immensely fruit forward and will put you in the mood to drink more wine!  I would place this wine at a 10/10 and I came back later in the day to drink more! The second wine is Cote Est Catalan. This wine has a variety of flavors. My family described it as Orange, Grapefruit, and Lemon. This drink is a solid 7/10.  Third white wine from France is Saint Veran 2020. This wine gives a cri
